There
are various application development programming languages and among
them PHP is one of the most popular scripting languages. Ease of use
and its simplicity makes it one of the preferred choices for
developers across the globe.
A
server side scripting language that made a sedate beginning; PHP has
come a long way over the years. Initially it was a collection of
divergent tools like the Perl scripts. Those days the traffic was
recorded on Rasmus Kerdorf’s and the term PHP stood as the
abbreviation for Personal Home Pages. With the change of time the
language has evolved into a complete object oriented language.
Leading
Language on Web
In
the web world, PHP easily stands out as the leading language for
scripting on the server side. A great number of sites on the web
have been designed with other scripting languages like Wordpress,
Drupal, Joomla and others but in all these PHP occupies a premier
place. More websites have been designed with PHP in comparison to
other languages. Basic reason for this is that PHP can be connected
to any database including the most popular Oracle and MySQL.
Cause
of PHP Popularity
Popularity
of PHP in the industry is largely because of the fact that more and
more people are now trying to learn codes. PHP is easy coding and one
can easily be used to create great Wordpress blogs and unique
documentation. But the pertinent question is what lies for PHP in the
future. Developers in regular touch with the language can learn it
easily as well. It is the reason why there is also huge demand for
PHP
application development.
What
PHP 6 Has in Store?
Pertinent
question for most developers using PHP for scripting is what the
upcoming PHP6 contains. Zend the creator of PHP knows pretty well
that their language faces stiff competition from Ruby on Rails as
well as ASP.net. Though hosting Ruby is difficult it may change in
near future and things may not look as bright as it looks presently
for PHP.
What
Statistics Indicates
Recent
survey conducted by 3techs.com indicates that the use of PHP is as
great as 81.7% on all websites. Also out of these websites as many as
97.6% are using the PHP5 as the scripting language. Figure 1
represents the status.

A Growing Language
However as on date, the scripting language is still
growing. Despite the fact that the growth is not as fast as it was
sometimes back, it still is considerable. Figure 2 below represents
the growth rate of the PHP in the industry.

The survey also revealed that more sites use PHP and it
is second only to Java sites. Perhaps the high security offered by
Java sites is the reason for this.
Experts and users alike are looking forward to PHP 6 but
unless it offers some great functionality. Users are likely to
compare it with PHP 5.3 that already offers some of the best
functionalities.
